Wind, Wind, Wind

Several dramatic storylines played themselves out this week on both the men's and ladies professional golf tours. The biggest story of the week was the wind that plagued both tours. This was a very unusual week in which the Verizon Heritage was postponed on Sunday due to the falling branches and debris. Usually the tour will play in such conditions but high winds kept the tournament postponed until Monday.

With windy weather forcasted for Monday, the outcome of the golf tournament was literally up in the air. Ernie Els was in the hunt and looking for his first win in several years on American soil. However, this was not to be. Els played a great round of golf by shooting 1-under par which fell just short of the eventual winner, Boo Weekley.

Boo Weekley recorded his first PGA Tour victory and landed spots in several prestigious tournaments. He has been playing well this year and moves up to 8th in the Fed-Ex Cup points race. Weekley did not play in The Master's the previous week and was well rested to battle the winds.

Master's Champion Zach Johnson had a remarkable showing at the Verizon Heritage. He finished in 6th place. This is incredible considering he traveled to New York City for various television appearances after his historic Master victory.

The LPGA also had to deal with heavy winds during the Ginn Open in Reunion, FL. The action on Sunday was intense coming down the stretch. Laura Davies, Lorena Ochoa, and Brittnay Lincicome battled down the back nine. Through 16 holes Laura Davies had a one shot lead but with the heavy winds which were gusting up to 40 mph, anything could happened.

As they stepped to the par-5 17th Laura Davies pulled her drive left into the trees and was forced to chip out into the fairway. Her approach shot landed on the green but finished away from the hole. From there Laura Davies ended up making a double-bogey and fell one shot behind Ochoa and Lincicome.

On the 18th hole, none of the players hit very good tee shots. Laura Davies found the bunker and eventually made a triple bogey. Neither of the other two players managed to hit the green in regulation. These last few holes were very important to all three players. Laura Davies was playing to move one step closer to being inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame. Lorena Ochoa needed a win to become the number one player in ladies professional golf. Brittany Lincicome was looking to add another victory to her resume.

In the end it was Brittany Lincicome who would hoist the winners trophy over her head. Women's golf has become more dramatic now that a player has come to the forefront to challenge Annika Sorenstam for the number one spot. With Sorenstam out for the next month with back problems, it should be easy for Lorena Ochoa to take over the number one position. How long she will hold that position will remain to be seen.

Perhaps with her recent success in the Ginn Open we will see Laura Davies playing over here in the states more often. She is only a couple of victories away from the LPGA Hall of Fame. Laura Davies is a seasoned veteran who knows how to win. She has 67 world wide victories to her credit. Only 20 of those have come on the LPGA Tour.
