PODS Championship Recap

This week Mark Calcavecchia posted his 13th win on the PGA Tour. Calcavecchia has not won on the PGA Tour since 1995. After he missed the cut at the Honda Classic, I didn't give him much chance of making the cut at the PODS Championship.
The funny thing about professional golf is that circumstances can change in a step. Mark Calcavecchia is the perfect example of this principle. The biggest factor in winning a PGA Tour event hinges on how well a player is putting that week. More times than not the player who is leading the putting statistics that week has a great chance to win the tournament or at least be at the top of the leader board.
At the PODS Championship Calcavecchia was number 1 in the putting statistics. This alone is quite remarkable since he was playing with a brand new putter he had recently purchased for around $250.
Many players at some point or another struggle with their putting games. It usually only takes a putter change or some other external change to bring their putting back to life. This would lead one to believe that putting is more about how a player feels over a putt than about the actual equipment or stroke. If you have confidence about making a shot the chances are greater that you will be successful.
Although Mark Calcavecchia has won the British Open he has been a very streaky player throughout his career. If his putter gets hot he will have a great chance at winning a golf tournament. In recent years his putting has been lacking as seen in the Honda Classic where he missed the cut.
It is good to see such a great player like Calcavecchia back in the winner circle. I hope he can keep a positive mental attitude for the rest of the season and take advantage of the opportunities his victory at the PODS Championship has given him.
This week the PGA Tour plays at a one of my favorite courses. Bay Hill Golf Club is located in beautiful Orlando, Florida. I have played this golf course several times and am always in awe of the difficulty of the golf course. Several of the holes border lakes and the par-3's are fairly challenging.
This year Arnold Palmer made several modifications to the golf course. He has shortened two holes and turned them into par-4's. This will make the golf course a par of 70 for the first time in the tournaments history.
Tiger Woods will be playing this week in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He has to be strong favorite for this event. He has won this tournament several times including four times in a row from 2000-2003. Tiger Woods makes his home in Orlando, Florida and he will not have to travel to play in this event. He should be very familiar with Bay Hill Golf Club which will be a great advantage to him.
This should be a great tournament based on the stellar field that will be playing. Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Charles Howell III and Ernie Els have committed to play in the event. All of these players have been playing well and the tournament should shape up to be very competitive.
