bandon dunesWhen the salmon run heavy, most times all you need is a net to pick them out of the water. The steelhead salmon is one of the most popular fish anglers take when visiting Oregon. As the summer is approaching, now is the time to start planning that outdoor vacation to this popular tourist area. Not only will you be able to fish but golf is becoming a major draw in the outdoor wonderland.

One of the most popular sites for salmon fishing in Oregon is located about a hour and a half north of Portland on the Tillamook Bay. The Tillamook Bay has always been one of the best places to catch the coveted King Salmon that every avid fisherman wants to snag. There are many ways to catch the fish, but one of the most exciting is to rent a pontoon and spend the day back trolling in search of this elusive fish. Back trolling is the best way to catch the King Salmon as they tend to hug the bottom of the river bed.

Besides fishing, there are ample things to do in the outdoors when visiting Oregon. Likewise, fun is also to be found underground. The Oregon Caves National Monument is great anytime of the year and is full of underground spectacles that will send ooh's and aah's through the whole family. The marble cave is one of the most popular tours in the park. Here you will find some of the most amazing formations in nature. The tours are seasonal and are offered from March to November.

When it comes to golf, there are few places that can match the quality of golf in Oregon. One of the most popular resorts in the state has to be Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Located in a very remote section of the state, this golf resort has become a mecca for the rich and famous. Three golf courses currently adorn the shores of the Pacific Ocean and each has a character of its own. The Bandon Dunes golf course as the first to open and was designed to emulate a traditional Scottish links golf course. The two other golf courses that followed were designed by Ben Crenshaw and Tom Doak. All three are well worth the trip to this fantastic facility.

Long have the stories been told about Tiger Woods' great US Amateur victory on the Witch Hollow golf course at Pumpkin Ridge, but the Ghost Creek track has a storied history of its own. The Ghost Creek course was home to the Nike Tour Championship in 1993-1994 - no small feat for the state of Oregon. This tournament alone should testify to the quality and condition of this championship layout. Designed by Robert Cupp, this golf course gently rolls through the hills and trees that line the Oregon landscape. Should you find your driver out of sorts, the dense pine forests will make an unwelcome companion during your round at Ghost Creek. Although this golf course will not overpower you with its length, only slightly over 6,800 yards, it will take an accurate tee ball to make the best score.

Not only does Oregon have some of the best golf courses in the country, but the outdoor activities make this a perfect spot to build some great family memories. There is nothing better than watching your son make a hole-in-one and then pull a King Salmon out of Tillamook Bay. These memories can only be made in the great outdoors that is Oregon.
