Sandpines Golf Links- Two Different Worlds
By Shane Jensen
Nov 12, 2007
Sandpines Golf Links uses the natural terrain and beauty of the landscape to create two very different nines. Designed by Rees Jones, this Oregon golf course can measure to over 7,200 yards from the back tee but is playable for any skill level of golfer. When it opened in 1993 this golf course was hailed as the "Best New Public Golf Course in America".
The front nine of Sandpines meanders through the majestic pines and sparkling blue lakes of this coastal land. The back nine is more of a links-style golf course that features rolling dunes and allows the golfer to play a wide variety of shots. Rees Jones is no stranger to designing championship golf courses and Sandpines Golf Links falls right into that category. When playing this golf course you get the feeling of playing in the Carolinas.
The 4th hole is really where this golf course starts to get interesting. This is a medium-length hole that measures 418 yards and is a dogleg right. This hole is surrounded by trees along the entire length of the hole and there are several bunkers down the right side that need to be avoided. The best play off the tee is down the left-hand side of the fairway with a slight fade.
Be careful not to go too far left as trees will block your view of the green and there is also a lake that guards the right side of this hole. The green on this hole is very small and has a very pronounced ridge that runs through the middle of it. There are several mounds around this green that can kick the ball back toward the hole.
As you head to the back nine be prepared for a dramatic difference in the landscape and nature of the golf course. This inward nine is designed in a links-style and doesn't feature as much of the Oregon pine forests. The 16th hole, a great risk/reward opportunity, is a perfect representative of the back nine.
The 16th hole is a short par-4 measuring only 364 yards but depending on the wind condition the longer hitters will have a chance to drive this green. The danger of taking this aggressive line is the water on the right side of the green. Any shot hit to the right of this hole will catch a slope and end up in a watery grave.
Most golfers will want to aim their tee shot toward the pot bunker that sits on the left side of the fairway. The green on this hole is small and players will need to be cautious when hitting their approach. Most players will only be left with a short iron into this green, but try to guard against going right. Although this hole is short it has many hazards that can produce a big number, so take care and don't let your guard down on this hole.
Sandpines Golf Links is located in Florence, which is located in central Oregon. The golf course is about one hour from the Eugene Airport. With so many fine golf courses in Oregon, Sandpines Golf Links provides the best variety of holes in the area. The contrast of the two nines makes this golf course fresh and one that should be on your "must play" list for Oregon.
