Bright lights and world-class gambling are all on the menu when you visit Atlantic City in New Jersey. New Jersey is one of the smallest states in America and only has around 350 golf courses to choose from. One of the most famous golf courses in the area is the legendary Pine Valley Golf Club, though most golfers will never be able to play there. Luckily there are many other fine golf courses located near Atlantic City that will give you a challenge.
Located just 16 miles north of Atlantic City, Blue Heron Pines Golf Club opened in 1993 and was designed by Stephen Kay. The front nine of this golf course is fairly straightforward with lots of bunkers but few doglegs. This side also has water that comes into play on seven of the nine holes. The back nine however is a much different story. This is the longer of the two sides and slithers like a python ready to strike. On this side you will have to weave the ball around doglegs and avoid the distinctive waste areas that dot the landscape. Blue Heron Pines is in great shape and only plays to slightly over 6,800 yards, but you will need to bring your "A" game. A big draw of playing golf in this area is the dense pine forest that lines the fairways.
Once you have mastered this golf course you might want to head south, about 12 miles from Atlantic City, and play the Harbor Pines Golf Club. Also designed by Stephen Kay, this golf course uses sand to intimidate the player into making bad swings. Much of your front nine will be spent avoiding bunkers or shaking sand out of your shoe. Many of the golf courses in New Jersey are not long but they do require you to work the ball around the large pines. Harbor pines is in great shape and has bent grass which makes for a wonderful playing surface. If you can keep the ball near the hole on these undulating greens you will have a great time here.
Atlantic City has been described as the gambling center of the East Coast. With the boardwalk, casinos and numerous family activities, this is a great place to spend some time. Temperatures are mild and there are so many great golf courses in the area. Some other golf courses you might want to check out include Twisted Dunes, Sea Oaks or Sand Barrens.
