Mountain Falls Golf ClubPahrump, Nevada is located about 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. This sparsely populated town has been slowly growing into a thriving community. As a city grows, more golf courses will start to show up. Mountain Falls is the latest course to open in Pahrump. This golf course is the focal point of a new housing development that is rapidly being built.

It is hard to believe that such a small community could produce such a wonderful golf course. Currently the course is new and has just a few homes surrounding the golf course. On many holes there is only desert and home lots to catch the errant tee shot.

I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of this golf course. I was able to hold the greens using a slightly harder golf ball. The greens on this golf course are medium-sized but they are quite quick. It didn't hurt that I had one of my best putting rounds of the year on this day.

The golf course looks easier on the card than it actually plays. Although many of the par-5's are reachable in two shots, some of the par-4's are well over 450 yards from the back tees. This combination of long and short holes keeps you interested in the golf course throughout the entire 18 holes.

The par-3 4th hole stands out as one of the toughest holes on the front nine. This hole measures 190 yards from the back tee. There is a water hazard bordering the left side of the green. If the wind is blowing, as it often does in Pahrump, you will need to take some extra club to get over the water. Any shot that is pulled will have a tough time getting over the water. You best shot is to aim toward the middle of the green.

The back nine of this golf course was designed by the Nicklaus Design Team. They have done a wonderful job of designing a great golf course in a small space. After several easy holes on the back nine there is the difficult 12th hole. This par-4 is 468 yards with a small water hazard running down the entire left-hand side of the fairway. This hole is visually challenging because the fairway looks smaller than it really is. Be sure to keep your ball on the right-hand side of the fairway to give yourself a chance to hit the green.

Water is an important feature on the back nine. It comes into play on five of the nine holes on the back nine. Again one of the hardest hole on the back nine is a par-3. The 14th hole measures 207 yards and is one of the toughest par-3's I have played in a long time. There is no room for error on this hole. With a long iron or wood in your hand you must land on a small green that slopes toward the water hazard on the left. Any shot that is hit to the left side of the green runs the risk of finding the water.

Playing safe to the right is not an option as there is a creek that guards the front and right side of the green. There is a small bail-out area to the right of the green, but this area is well below the green and makes for a difficult pitch onto this elevated green.

In addition to offering a nice, challenging golf course, Mountain Falls is visually pleasing to look at. There are several waterfalls that make the water hazards feel less threatening. Once they complete all the construction around the golf course this will be a diamond in the rough. Currently there is a lot of dust flying around from the construction sites. If you can catch a day when the wind is not blowing you will have a great time.
