On Sunday, June 3, 2007, the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Southwest Section of the PGA of America hosted the first Play Golf America Day in Las Vegas. This event was graciously hosted by Angel Park Golf Club and their Director of Golf, David Stead. Despite the hot weather everyone who attended the event had a great time.

This event was designed to introduce new or infrequent players to the game of golf and the PGA of America. Around 25 members of the local chapter of the PGA were on hand to provide instruction and dispense information to the receptive crowd. There were several instruction stations set up around the practice facility that included full swing, chipping and putting. Each of these stations was run by a qualified PGA Professional.

Throughout the course of the day there were many other activities for the participants to enjoy. ESPN Radio talk show host Dennis Silver was on hand to pass out raffle prizes that included free clubs, putters and rounds of golf at various golf courses around the city. ESPN Radio also did a live broadcast from the site.

Several club manufacturers brought the latest equipment for the public to test out. This gave the public a unique opportunity to talk with experts about which clubs would best fit their game and then test them out on the spot. Callaway Golf, Ping Golf, Magique Golf, Titleist and Cobra all had booths set up at the practice facility.

In addition to the many prizes being offered, Craig Hocknull of the Southwest Section put on a trick shot show for the crowd. Entitled "The Outback Golf Show", Craig has performed his show for many groups including at the FBR Open on the PGA Tour. Craig Hocknull uses a wide variety of props and clubs to dazzle the crowds with his roughly 30 minute long program. Craig was born in Australia and his show has a definite Aussie feel.

This will not be the last Play Golf America Day to happen in Las Vegas. Stallion Mountain Golf Club has already expressed an interest in holding another such event in the fall. This will give the people in the east valley the opportunity to experience the fun the people in Summerlin had.

The PGA of America is dedicated to promoting the game of golf and including as many people as possible. You can find a local Play Golf America Day in your area by visiting their website at www.playgolfamerica.com. Visit this site often to find out when new locations have been added. Take the time out your schedule to introduce a friend to this wonderful game.
