Paiute Golf Resort: Lush Oasis In A Barren Desert

Located about 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip sits the Las Vegas Paiute Resort. This complex sits on land that is owned by the Las Vegas Paiute tribe. There are three golf courses on this property and all of them were designed by Pete Dye. These legendary golf courses are a must-play for anyone looking for phenomenal course conditions and a challenging day of golf.
As you are driving out to the golf course, you may find it hard to imagine that anything could be built on such harsh and barren land. The three courses at the Paiute Golf Club, however, have utterly thrived. The first golf course to open on the property was the Snow Mountain Golf Course. This is a typical Pete Dye design, complete with railroad ties and numerous water hazards to catch a stray ball.
The golf course is a fair test of skill that will challenge golfers at every level. It is important to keep the ball in the grass on this golf course. Surrounding the course is the natural terrian that must have been traveled by earlier members of the Paiute tribe as they crossed the desert. The land is unforgiving and littered with rock and small shrubs.
The second hole is a tough dogleg left par-4 that measures 426 yards from the back tees. The trickiest shot on this hole is the tee shot. It is very difficult to see the complete landing area, and you may have the sensation that you are hitting a blind shot. With few landmarks in the background it is tough to pick a line if you have not played the course before. The best play is to aim right of the bunker on the left side of the fairway.
The approach shot to the green is slightly uphill and the green is guarded by a bunker on the right. Many times, if you hit your ball into a bunker, it will be difficult to get the ball close to the hole. Most of the bunkers are well below the level of the greens and make it hard to spin the ball. The greens at the Paiute Resort are always in great condition and usually roll at about 9-10 on the stempmeter.
Water comes into play on 6 of the 18 holes, with the water usually around the greens. One of the most dramatic holes on the golf course is the par-3 16th hole. This long hole measures 198 yards from the back tee. The view from the tee is something to behold. The backdrop of this hole is Sheep Mountian and the barren desert that leads up to it. The sparseness of the land is unlike anything you will ever encounter.
The 16th hole is a beast that bares its fangs in the form of jagged rocks that front the green. Be sure to check your yardages and direction of the wind, as both of these factors will be extremely important to holding this narrow green. This is a daunting shot for even the best players.
The 18th hole on the Snow Mountain Golf Course is a great finishing hole. There is water down the entire left-hand side of the hole but the fairway is very generous. The best play is to make an aggressive swing over the bunker on the left and find the middle of the fairway. From this position you will be left with a mid to long iron into this tricky green. Don't let your ego dictate your shot on this hole, play away from the water and find the middle of the green. Hopefully you will have good enough putting skills to make a par.
This golf course is a very fair golf course but has several holes that can ruin a good round. It is not uncommon to find several large numbers on the scorecard at the end of the day. Day in and day out this golf course is one of the best conditioned in Las Vegas. It is a great opportunity to experience Pete Dye golf in the desert.
