Making A Good Transition

pga logoOne of the most common mistakes that I see golfers make is their transition from the top of the backswing to the forward swing. Many times this transition is hurried and counter-productive to a good swing. When this transition is timed right players will hit some of the best shots of their lives. How many times during a round do you comment on how effortless the swing felt and the ball travels farther than normal?

For many players one mistake I see in this transition is an overly active lower body. Often times the lower body will race ahead of the arms and upper body causing poor swings and timing. If you can learn to coordinate the two halves of the swing you will find yourself hitting more solid shots and increase your distance at the same time.

A great drill to quiet the lower body is to make some swings with a beach ball between your legs. Place the beach ball between your knees and take some halve swings to get the feeling for the new sensation. The beach ball will keep the legs more stable and allow the hands and lower body to work together in a more coordinated fashion.

If you watch the best players on the PGA Tour you will see that their tempo from the backswing and forward swing is relatively the same. They try not to hurry or force the club into a certain position. Keeping the lower body steady and in pace will help with this transition.

If you find yourself feeling rushed or falling off balance during your swing this is a great drill to use. If you have any further questions please contact your local PGA Professional.
