castle pinesSome of the most scenic golf courses anywhere in the country can be found in the great state of Colorado. There are so many different types of golf courses in the area that it sometimes can be hard to choose the right one. Over the last few years there has been a boom in golf course construction in Colorado and some really great golf courses have been built.

If you are planning a trip to Colorado here is a list of some of my favorite golf courses that I think you will enjoy. I grew up in there and had the opportunity to play many of the best golf courses in the state.

Riverdale Dunes Golf Club

There are two golf courses at this complex but the better of the two is the Dunes Course. Designed by Pete Dye, this golf course has been opened for over 20 years. This is a classic example of Dye at his best. Here you will find a golf course that can actually burn down. Most of the golf holes feature some sort of railroad tie that borders a lake or bunker.

I remember when I played this golf course for the first time and was amazed by the bent grass fairways. This was one of the tightest playing surfaces I've ever had a chance to play. The golf course will require you to avoid water hazards and keep the ball in the fairway. This is really a great golf course to play!

The Ridge at Castle Pines

Carved out the hills that surround Castle Pines, this facility is truly a wonder to behold. The back nine is really where this golf course gets started. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, the golf course fits naturally into the surrounding landscape and many of the holes are lined by huge pine trees on both sides of the fairway. The golf course only plays 7,100 yards but keeping the ball in the fairway is vital to shooting a good score.

Throughout the golf course you will find dramatic elevation changes and the ball will travel a long distance in the thin air. This golf course is located higher in the hills than golf courses in the valley, and this added elevation translates into more yardage with your clubs. The greens on this golf course are lighting fast and very undulating. As you play this golf course you will get the feeling you are in the mountains.

Buffalo Run Golf Club

Buffalo Run Golf Club is a links-style golf course that has few trees and lots of bunkers. Many of the holes on this golf course are surrounded by deep grass that makes hitting the fairways a premium. On this golf course you will be able to run the ball onto the quick, undulating greens. Putting is very important on this golf course and using the putter from off the green can save you strokes. I have seen players use their putter from 30 yards off the green, the fairways are just that good.

This golf course has a nice assortment of long and short holes and a par-3 that measures over 260 yards. Certainly this is not a golf course for the faint of heart. There are several sets of tees which makes this golf course playable for any skill level of golfer. If you like links golf, you will like Buffalo Run.

Playing golf in Colorado can be quite an experience, from the thin air to the beautiful mountain golf courses. If you are planning a trip to Colorado these are great golf courses to try. They are all in great condition and will test your game.
