The South Course At Terra Lago

The Golf Club at Terra Lago is one of the many fine golf courses located in Indio, California and played host to the PGA Tour's Skins Game from 1999-2002. There are two golf courses located on this property, both designed by the team of Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley. The golf courses were intended from their design to host PGA Tour events and accommodate large crowds throughout the golf course.
The South Course is the longer of the two tracks and meanders it's way around the All-American Canal. The golf course measures over 7,200 yards from the tournament tees. Playing golf in the Palm Springs desert can be quite different for many golfers as there are not many landmarks to use as reference points.
The South Course has a very rugged feel with sand traps and desert areas lining both sides of many of the fairways. It is not unusual to find little hidden bunkers and waste areas in places you might least expect them.
A unique feature on this golf course are the palm trees that surround several of the greens. These trees are barely pencil thin and shoot straight up into the air. Although many people typically associate this type of tree with a sunny, warm paradise, they somehow seem awkward on the golf course. The 7th and 18th holes both feature vast armies of these tree surrounding the greens.
The South Course is maintained at Tour standards for most of the year. The fairways and greens are fast and undulating. Schmidt and Curley were mentored by Jack Nicklaus and they have taken his love of large, fast greens and incorporated them into their style. When playing a hole, it will be very important for you to know which area of the green the pin is located on in order to give yourself the shortest putt.
One unique thing about this golf course is the layout of the back nine. The back nine features three par-3's and three par-5's. Holes 12-15 alternate between par-3's and par-5's and this is a great stretch of holes to make a move on the scorecard. The hard desert ground should give you a great chance of reaching the par-5's in two and hopefully surviving the par-3's.
The wide open fairways, dramatic views, and desert landscape make the South Course at Terra Lago a must-play if you are looking for golf in California.
