pelican hillAfter closing down for two years, the Pelican Hill Golf Club has re-opened after undergoing a major renovation. Originally these two golf courses were designed by Tom Fazio and he recently came in and updated the golf courses. The Ocean North plays to a par 71 while the Ocean South plays to a par 70 and both are great representatives of golf in California.

During the renovation process bunkers were added, additional tees were built, and the turf on the golf course was replaced to enhance the surface of the golf course. All of the collars around the greens were enlarged to give players a better shot options around the greens.

Pelican Hills is located between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach about 45 minutes from the Los Angeles International Airport. These golf courses were originally designed in the early 1990's and both have views of the Pacific Ocean from nearly every hole. In addition to the redesigned golf course the clubhouse was completely rebuilt and designed by Andrea Palladio, who gave it an Italian feel.

The Ocean South Course is the shorter of the two golf courses but has some of the most dramatic views on the property. The 13th hole is a perfect example of why this golf course is a must-play. This hole measures 131 yards but interestingly there are two greens on this hole. There are separate yardage plates for each of the greens so be sure to check that you are playing the correct yardage.

The greens on this hole are divided by a huge waste bunker that runs between them and in front of the right green. Take a moment from this tee to enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean on your left, as this is one of the most picturesque sites on the entire property.

Typical of Tom Fazio designs, here he is concerned with not only the shape of the hole but the visual qualities of the golf course. This golf course is a good test for any skill level of golfer and with multiple tee settings, can suit even the high handicap player.

The 7th hole is the longest par-4 on the Ocean North Course measuring 450 yards. This is a very large fairway with a well-placed bunker in the middle of the fairway. A good tee shot will leave the player left of this bunker with the best angle into the green. Going to the right is safer but leaves a much more difficult shot.

The green on this hole is guarded by bunkers on the left and it drops off into the Ocean to the right. The best place to miss the ball is to the left side of the green. From here you will have the best chance to make a par. The greens on this golf course are very fast, and a good putting touch will greatly improve your score.

The Pelican Hill Golf Club has dramatic views, good course conditions and two very challenging layouts. Currently the rate for both golf courses is $235 every day of the week. Considering the location, this is a great deal for the quality of the course. Pelican Hill is a worthy addition to one of America's top golf destinations.
